With a wound that looks like that, I would be giving antibiotics, and keeping him in a stall, to keep the bandage on the wound....I sure hope he gets better soon..Cathy

Today I went out there and rewrapped it and cleaned it out and stuff. The wound looks great. Red, not ***** at all. Unfortunatly his knee is quite swollen as is his fetlock.
Get the vet out now, not later. Infection from puncture wounds can get very bad very fast. Do not administer antibiotics without the vet having looked at it. Penicillin might be suitable, might not be; might be suitable as a FIRST course, followed by something else like mitronidazole. The last internal abcess that my TB gelding had, which behaved just like a closed up puncture wound as it developed internally in a nice, anaerobic environment (bruised bone was the guess), reguired penicilling, SMZ/TMP, mitronidazole, and another one I'm blanking on. It needed so many mainly because it festered for a few days before it became a lameness/visible issue.

Im with Jb on this one. Im also worried about the swelling since it is on the same knee. At the very least I would consult the vet over the phone and discuss it. they might be able to tell you what you need to do and look for without using a trip out for something that could turn out to be minor. However with a puncture wound you generally don't want to apply antibiotics without vet approval. it is much better to flush it with water and wrap it than anything else. At the most I would use Blood Stop Powder by Agrilabs if there was significant bleeding.

There wasnt significant bleeding as my trainer didnt notice it until he was actually lame on that leg.

When I go out there tomorrow I will check it again. If it is still swollen I will call the vet...now that you guys have me worried. eep. I really dont want him to get bad.

Puncture wounds rarely bleed "significantly", and often you don't even know they are there, both due to what makes them very dangerous - they close up quickly, trapping bacteria and garbage inside a nice anaerobic environment, a great "spa" for the proliferation of all sorts of bad bugs.

well i brought him in today. It was less swollen than yesterday but still quite swollen so I cold hosed it. My trainer was sleeping (she worked last night) so I didnt call the vet, I didnt know the number.

His fetlock is not swollen at all anymore. I unwrapped it in the morning because the bandage was off anyway. The poor baby looks miserable (not a good thing!)

So he seems like he is doing better. I will be making a point this week of going out so I can check him out and if need be get a vet out there.

Why are you continuing to wait? You don't know your vet's number? The longer you wait, the more you risk a REALLY REALLY NASTY infection building up in there.

Having witnessed MANY puncture wounds on animals this past summer (and this past weekend...) I can tell you first hand to call the vet YESTERDAY! Punctures get nasty FAST! The inside tissue can and will die if not treated properly right away.
