GRE Today

Ok, today is the day. I have not slept, I have not studied hard enough. LOL

Talked to the grad school one more time....to confirm a few things, as I was scoring 75% in the math area last night...but getting most right on the practice tests.

LUCKLY, i have to score 25% or HIGHER on the test in ONE area. 33, 44% gtes me in.

I'm like, OH ok....(was not putting two and two together..LMAO)

If I clear 50% in one area, I get in unconditionally, and if I blow it out of the water, they have full ride scholarships still available. (yeah, right...NOT for me...LMAO)

ok, Don't you hate it when right before the test, you literally can't think straight?

Okay. Relax. Take a nap -- you'll need your wits about you when you get there, especially for the math.

I scored much higher on the actual test than I did in the practise tests. If you're getting a high raw score, your test score will be higher than the practise test said.

Strategy: Most important: ALWAYS use process of elimination (POE). Don't jump to an answer, eliminate answers. If you can't eliminate more than two, then guess and move on. I made a grid (question no, A B C D) down my page and used that for my POE. It's efficient and very useful.

The test gets progressively harder the better you do. Getting the first 15 correct will set you up for a high score as the last third/half of the test is refining your score (are you a 660 or a 670?) while the first half/two thirds is putting you into your score ballpark (are you a 500 or a 700?). You ARE penalized for not finishing, so watch your time. Take it slow for the first 2/3 and if it looks like you'll have trouble finishing, guess the rest!

Math Strategy: Focus on the basics. Read the question CAREFULLY and spot the trick. If you're gonna score above 650 every question will have some sort of trick in it towards the end. I scored 800 on the math, and lemme tell ya, from about half way through I was seriously worried cos it got REALLY tricky!

Verbal Strategy: Be really careful with those comprehension questions. With the rest of the questions, every word you see, define it. Absolutely without question use Process of Elimination.

I was warned that I would do two sets of one test (verbal or math) and one of the other (verbal or math) and that I wouldn't know which was graded out of the one I did twice. This really stressed me out because I was pretty burned out after the math. Well, in fact, the first one was graded and the second one was not, and it was very obvious because they were trying out a new format for the math section. I don't know if that's been implemented yet or not, though.

Essay... well I did badly on this (4.5/6 = 52nd percentile) and I think it was because I was trying to use too many of my newly-learned big words and didn't plan very well. Remember that one is a PERSUASIVE and the other is a CRITIQUE. The most common mistake made in the latter is that people try to argue, rather than critique the argument.

Breath deeply, take your potty break between essay and math/verbal to clear your mind, and most importantly: Good luck!

I bet you a dollar you get a free ride .

Awesome thanks.

Honestly, I didn't study much on the words. I just studied mostly the math, as that is easier for me to comprehend, score, and kick butt at.

On the practice...I was scoring in the 300 range in the verbal, and 500-800 on the math portion.

The key to my school, is the %. Just need above 25% in one area. That I can do...so that took a LOT of stress off me this morning. I was scoring consistantly above that in the verbal suprisingly. LOL Not MUCH higher, but still.

When I'm not stressed and don't care about scores, I seem to do better. So I'm hoping that knowing the score I need is low....I'll kick butt.

I'll know this afternoon...I drop kids off at noon, got to be there by 12:30......

How long is the test???

Um... I think 2.5 hours, maybe 3. Let's see, 1hr 15 min for the essays, then 10 min break, then 45 min for math, 30 min for verbal, and actually for me doing the third test (math for me) was optional. Also you have up to half an hour for practise.

Don't forget your ID and if you received anything in the mail about the test, take that too.

I would forget about the math from here on and read through that word list one more time. Last minute cramming helped for me with the words. Then, using process of elimination, you can usually get down to a 50-50 guess and exceed yourself in verbal!

The awesome thing is that you get your scores as soon as you're done so while school will have to wait for the official confirmation, at least you'll know immediately if you have a shot at that full ride.
