| Senior Member+ | Grazing Muzzle questions
I just ordered my mare a grazing muzzle a couple of days ago and it should be in any day. I have a few questions about them. 1.) Can you leave them on rain or shine? 2.) Should you take it off at night? 3.) Anything else I need to know about them?? Thanks ahead of time!!

If your horse is kept inside, take off when turned in. If not, take off daily and check and clean. They can accumulate dirt and sticks and such can poke into them. Some horses will rub them or paw at them trying to remove them, so just check regularly to make sure everything is okay. If it is to prevent eating too much, you can leave it on for part of the day and take it off part of the day to give them a break. I always think about "the man in the iron mask". My horse has a feed bag and I have accidently left it on all day and he was fine, but I felt bad about it! |

I have one for my pony. Somedays she wears it 24/7, somedays not. Depends on how much grass is in the pasture and how she's feeling. If you leave it on for long periods you do need to check on it to make sure 1) it's still on 2) it's not caught on anything and 3) it's not rubbing any raw spots on her face. Mine is not a break-away and she's in the pasture 24/7.

I refuse to leave mine on for 24 hours, as I only use it during the day to keep her grass intake down and I provide hay at night. You have to keep the gut flora going or you may wind up with a colic case and being an extreme discussing leaving it on this long is adviseable as per BF FAQ which I agree with. My mare gets a reprieve once in awhile but only in overcast times or early am but she is monitored closely. |

It's not recommended to leave them on 24/7. Your horse needs to be able to eat enough fibre to avoid colic. And to also lick some salt and to get a good drink. My horse wears hers for most of the day but comes in at night to hay in her stall and salt lick and water.
