Grazing muzzle causing rubs

Ariel and I just noticed that Breez and Khavele have rubbed spots on their upper lip from their grazing muzzles. I think it's from the way they wiggle their lip around to maneuver the muzzle to get grass.
Has anyone else noticed this on their horses? Do they eventually get calloused or something, or what can we do to prevent it from getting rubbed raw, besides just not using the muzzles? Would adjusting them more loosely help?

Try putting vaseline in the muzzle, is it on too tight? Hard I know as too tight it rubs too loose they get it off!

Oh, that's a good idea, didn't think about that. Actually, I'll probably put bag balm on, because that's good for scrapes and such.

I didn't think we had them on too tight. They aren't even touching the upper lip when the horses have their heads raised. But maybe we'll try putting them a little looser just to see.

Honestly, I'm amazed that only one horse has managed to get theirs off just once. I thought we'd always be going out to search for the lost muzzle to put it back on!

Do they have about an inch space at the bottom...between their lips and the muzzle?

Yes, at the least.
