Grazing Muzzle

My buckskin loves to eat and is gaining so much weight that I am concerned. He is on pasture 24/7 and I don't have the heart to put him in a stall with the other two horses running free.

Do any of you have a grazing muzzle that works? Valley Vet Supply has one that has the breakaway system in the halter for $60. Is that too much to pay. They have a clip on to your existing halter for $50.

Country Supply has a couple of clip-ons for $15 and $20.

Do they work? If they do it would be worth it.

He gets about 2 ounces of grain (pellets) twice a day. I feed twice a day so I can get them in the stall and check them out plus we have some quality time together. Also fresh water. I'm retired so I just hang out with them.

They are on about 14 acres of lush grass now that it rained. It's bahai & bermuda mostly.

I have seen grazing muzzles work. It slows them down a bit. You can tie on with twine instead of clipping to a regular halter, that way it will break if you get the $15 one.

2 oz of pellets won't change the fact of the weight. That is not "significant" amounts to make a difference.

That is like a handful of grain.

John, is there a way to lock all the horses up at night?

I could put them in the barn at night. They each have their stalls, but they poop in them and then I have to clean them. lol Would stalling at night make enough difference? When they are all in the barn they are happy. I have fans running 24/7 so they should be fairly cool. In fact they spend a good deal of the hot part of the day in the stalls but go to the pasture to poop.

Probably not, but it might.

Maybe from 8am - 5 pm, they can be on pasture
