It's used to 'grab' onto. Kind of like the horn on a western saddle (yes I know that's not what a horn is supposed to be used for). It's mainly for beginner riders. It's also useful if you're learning how to canter. You can hold yourself into the saddle so that you can feel the movement in your hips. Same with sitting trot. I never used it although when I was learning to ride english, it was on all of the saddles. But since I got used to it, I'm more comfortable with one on. No particular reason. |

Yeah Dawn has the right idea it is used in case of emergencies. After my riding accident I bought a breastplate for the same reason. I have no problems with my saddle slipping back but I figured the breastplate could be used the same as a grab strap. I haven't ridden yet since the accident but I make my little sis ride with the breast plate. Part of the reason the fall was so bad on me is I had nothing to grab onto so I feel better knowing that when I do decide to start riding again the breast plate will be there. Just FYI There are quite a few top level dressage riders that use grab straps.

| Senior Member+ | Yup, thats what they are used for. Many beginners use them when they are first starting out...especially with posting. The same effect can be done by putting a leg wrap around the horse's neck for them to hold on to to help with balance. I see that done more often then the actual grab strap.
