Goopy eye??

Hi all.
For the past three days I've gone to the barn to see my horse and he's had some yellowish goop in the corner of his left eye. He usually has a small dot of goop or some crusties, but this has progressivley produced more and more. Not to any extreme, only about 3cm sort of "drip" last night.. Anyways I've been wiping his eye and other then the goop he seems fine. He can see alright, his eye is clear and not dull, the rest of hims fine. The BO kept him in from the field because she was worried he'd gotten into something or was coming down with a cold.

I'm going to keep an eye on it (pun not intended) and if it doesn't go away in a few days I'll get the vet out, but does anyone have any ideas what could cause it?

He has allergies, but it's only given him a runny nose, never bothered his eye.

My first guess was maybe he poked himself in the eye with some hay or whatnot.

Anyways thanks!!

I always have a tube of Teramyacin (spellling?) on hand for things like that. I get it at the feed store, it's $16 for a .2 (or so) size tube, but it's cheaper than a vet call, usually it clears up by the next day. I like to try that before calling the vet out.

It never hurts to wash the eye out too. Sometimes something will get under the lid and get trapped, flushing it out and putting the Teramyacin... copying HM's spelling ;-)... should help.
When it is dry and dusty or hay bits fly about, it is easy for goopy eyes to occur.

what ever you do don't use any ointment that has a steriod in it without first consulting with the vet to be sure there isn't a scratch or ulcer that's causing the goopy eye. More likely it's the fly season that's the problem or maybe his tear duct is blocked - if that's the case you'll need the vet out.
