Goopy Eye?

Yesterday I noticed that Rain's eye was kinda watery, and I just figured it got a little dust in, and it would be fine.
Weeell, this morning, it's a little worse, and in the very corner, there's a little bit of redness.
Is there any kind of cream, or medication I can put on this, for cheap? Or should I have the vet look at it? I don'tthat serious, but it looks kinda nasty.

thanks~
Susan

Never mess with eyes. Get the vet out! (I've learned the hard way trust me)

Terramycin at feed store or equine supply

terramycin opthamolic antibiotic ointment, it is not expensive. You can get it in Tractor Supply, Equine supply, Feed store, or from your vet. Rinse, (gently squirt without touching the eye) with a saline solution for eyes, (walmart) or get clear eyes for equines at an equine supply, after that sqeeze the terramycin ointment into the eye, don't touch the eye with the container, it will contaminate it. Put on a fly mask.
If no improvement in 1-2 days get it checked by a Vet.

This always works for our pony whose eyes are sensitive to flys, hay, ect.
Best of luck.

I second the ointment. You can also try just regular contact lense solution. That will help get anything out that may be in there. But if you the horses eye is yellow and goopy I would get the ointment.

I usually don't mess around with eyes either, but if they're just runny, and the eye is clear and the discharge is clear, they might just have gotten some sand or dust in and then rubbed it, and it's irritated.

Clean the face so dirt isn't falling into the eye and flush it out best you can with either water or optical saline and take a fairly hot/warm washcloth and press down the face from the tear duct all the way to the nose, and wipe the nostrils out thoroughly. There is a drain duct there just under the skin where excess tears should drain down to a hole in the nostril that you can see if you look for it. That can often become clogged and a warm washcloth can help clear it.

Then see. If it dries up... great. If it doesn't, he may need the vet to shoot some saline up through that duct and clean it out. Or there may be another problem.

I have both the solution & the ointment, but I would keep a close eye on it & consult your vet. Even if you just consult initially on the phone, eyes or eye issues can turn ugly really fast & permanent.

Susan, I'd go with the ointment, put her fly mask on--if she has one--to keep the flies/dust/sun out of her irritated eye, and give it a day or two. If it's not clearing up by then, or seems worse, call the vet.
You don't want to mess around too much when it's their eyes, but giving it a day or two will give it time to heal if it is just a poke, or something in her eye.

denraydar got the ointment right i use it on my appendix because he likes to roll in sand with his eyes open so i contsantly have to use it. What always works well the contact solution works well also especially to rinse out the sand.

Okay, it must have just been some dust or something in her eye, because I went out again today, and the clear, watery stuff had stopped, and the redness is going away. =)
I guess it just had to work it's way out.

thanks anyway! I'll get the ointment for future problems, if any.

IME, the clear watery = fly irritation! Do you have a fly mask?
