Going to Unadilla, NY Horse Auction today...

I am going with the rescue I volunteer at, to the Unadilla horse auction in Unadilla new york. It runs every friday, and it is a notorious feedlot/slaughter auction. My parents decided to surprise me this morning with $100 saying "We know you know that you can't save them all, but maybe tonight you will at least be able to save one" So we will see, I've been told that these horses have been sold for $50 or less. I know a lady who got a pregnant percheron mare from this auction for $50.

So I guess wish me luck! And I will update when I get home tonight if I got anything!

I live in Afton, which is 15 min away from there. It's a horrible place! I try to avoid it only because everytime I go, I find a new rescue. And yes, horses go for well under $50 there. I actually have a thoroughbred mare that I bought there 2 months ago. Skin and bones, paid $40. She is the most broke horse I have probably ever owned and now that she has gained a ton of weight, we are giving lessons to beginners on her once a week. Let me know how it was, I almost went, but stopped myself. I am like you, I want to save them all! Good luck!

Good for you. Hope you can find one that you can save. And bless your parents for supporting you this way. They must be special folks.

I live near Unadilla... Its a bad auction. I like going when JP Norths is there to sell tack. I know a guy who sells horses there all the time... not a guy I will do business with ever. Ive seen some decent horses everyonce and awhile... but most are in horrid condition.

You parents are very special people to allow you and give you the opportunity to do this. It makes me happy that there are people like this still left in this world. And even if you end up getting a horse that is so bad off that it doesn't make it, the horse will at least of had the last days (or months) of its life spent in a happy and loving environment!! Thank you so much for being willing to do something like this!

That is awesome that you got the opportunity to do this. I've heard nothing but bad things about that auction, that was Dream's next stop if we had never taken her I hope you had some good luck there! I'd like to go there only when I have the money because bleeding hearts + auctions = NO. LOL, last time I went to an auction I cried once and my mom cried a few times...maybe next year I'll try it again!

I just want to update that I didn't make it to the auction... I found out that A horse whose very special to me has cancer and may need to be put down, I was a wreck yesterday and was not up to driving 2 1/2 hours up there to see those horses that would break my heart even more....

I was told that the total run through Unadilla last night was 63, plus 1 llama, 1 baby billy goat and 2 days old calves on bottles.

Many Nice horses went to the meat buyers... And there were a bunch of poor skin and bones horses that sold for only $10 or $20.

I still may be getting a pregnant roan quarter horse mare who was sold to the meat buyers for $50... The lady who runs the rescue i volunteer is going to be calling the auction... So fingers crossed
