Exclamation Girth elastic on left?
Why is the girths elastic end go on the horses left side?
Why do you start with the right side when attaching it to the saddle?

Ok, i think i know what your on about, you mean an English girth with an elastic side and one side with no elastic?

It should actually go on the right side of the horse (off side) so you are not encouraged to tighten the girth so much. And you attatch the girth on the right first (off side) because you tighten mostly on the left side (near side). Am i making sense? lol

Your elastic is supposed to be on the left so you can check it and make it tight enough before you hop on.

And you start on the right so that if your girth is just long enough (and it shouldn't be too large), you can buckle the solid side then stretch the elastic side to the billets. Then you tighten the right as much as possible before snugging up the left side.

huh i was taught by a BHS approved instructor to put in on the off side so i wont be encouraged over tighten the girth. The elastic gives the feeling that you can tighten and tighten.

oh so im just doing it the other way round. nothing really wrong with that, as long as i dont over tighten!

It takes a lot to over tighten a girth... Practical Horseman or Equus did a study on it years ago, and you need a double sided elastic girth and you have to REALLY over tighten it, and even then the difference in breathing and performance is marginal, at best.

Actually, I prefer the elastic on both sides. With both sides flexible, the girth "breathes" better with the horse...for lack of better explanation...
