Arrow Getting that perfect mane!

I have tried so many times to get the perfect mane, like what you see on many dressage horses and jumpers. The flat lying, thin, few inches long to me just looks very elegant! I almost had it from Ollie over the winter when I grew out his mane more since there were no shows to worry about. Then I pulled it, trying my best to be careful and keep the same length but losing the fullness. Didn't happen

The hardest thing is his mane, at the top, naturally goes forward instead of lying flat. So half his mane lies flat and the other half grows forward haha You can see in the pic what I'm talking about by the top part grows forward...

Now, I haven't cut his bridle path in forever! Never felt the need to but I'm thinking that may help Not sure though...

How exactly do I get that perfect mane though??

For a visual aid, this is what I'm looking for

I have got a type of rake to thin out the mane...its actually a dog grooming product to help shed coat....it works a treat...I will check the brand and it post later... as I am sure its a product we import from the US anyway.

I've braided my mare's mane and left it for a looong time, in the hopes that it would stay on that side... no such luck Because of that I don't think a mane tamer would work much better...

That's why I've given up hope! Ahhh! I don't know what to do!

Keeping braids in for long periods of time is unhealthy for the mane and uncomortable for the horse so even if it worked, I wouldn't do it
