I've given up on having a perfect looking NON-braided mane! As of right now Buddy's mane currently stands straight up, it's about 4 inches long and thin, perfect for braiding, but not so much for just laying pretty

So, I figure, as long as it looks stunning in braids when I'm at a show I can survive with it looking less than stellar in our day to day routine!

They were loose braids, she could easily bend her head and such. It wasn't a big deal.

My mare's mane is already awful I don't think it could get any worse... braids or not, haha.

I feel your pain. Joe's does the exact same thing. I've had to keep him all bundled up to stay away from the flies and mosquitos and it works well for getting his mane to lay flat. It works fairly well, but it is very staticy and he hates getting shocked.

hehe crazyellowhorse, I dont blame your boy. I hate the shocks too but I think that is just the dry air in Alberta. It is very staticky here. I also have a crazy yellow horse (well he's young so there is hope for him) but I was curious what is your palomino's breeding (he looks a lot like my last gelding from Ponoka)

wow, and i thought i was at a disadvantage.
my mares mane gets wavy on the first half and it really bothers me.
but yesterday i cut it to 3 3/4 in and it is still lying flat but it seems to like to lay on a diagonal forward. (:

as for your problem..i would put a slinky on him..like only the hood part.
and lay the hair flat and straight under it.

Haha me too! Jessy's mane looks great in braids, so... who cares otherwise?

Yes..thats it ..Furminator.. I have tamed a few manes with that gadget...most of ours also wear a combo blanket with the neck rug which is satin lined, and that also helps keep the mane flat and easier to control once its thinned or pulled.
