I would definately find an open show near you.Search the web, call around, even feed stores may know of something near you.

AQHA shows are not good first shows. I didnt show in a breed show until I had shown in local shows for 2 years. They are super fun but you have to work up to them.

Also, you cannot show your TB in an AQHA show unless it is an AQHA/Open show combined.

They are really good practice and alot of times at the ones I do the People who do the AQHA shows and APHA shows come so I get a feel for what it's like at a bigger show without having to go through all the stress and crazy amounts of money they cost.
Thank you for the advice, I just so badly want to get some points at least on one of my mares before she has her next foal. But I'll look into seeing if I can't find any local schooling shows.

lol I know how you feel. I have a new APHA mare that is no where near where she needs to be to be able to show APHA, but I have wanted to be able to show APHA my whole life so it's just like killing me not to take her to a show just for the heck of it.

From what I understand is that Gymnkanah is games on horseback. Like Barrels and poles There are also things like flag races and such. People at the shows I go to refer to all of the speed events as Gymkanah, but we also have 2 full Gymkanah days every year where we do nothing, but games on horseback all day.

I have an great site for any Californians - www.bayequest.com (It's not only the Bay Area ).
Here's the link to all the show venues (http://results.bayequest.info/showfac.php), and a link to any events/shows (http://results.bayequest.info/events.php). I visit that site at least once a day, and they have great classified ads as well
