The equine is unique in mammals in that the fetus determines gestational length, not the mare. Average length of gestation is from 320 to 370 days. 340 is given as the "average" length of gestation, but it is indeed an average of averages. A mare is not considered overdue until she hits 370 days. And, a variety of things can influence gestational length including weather, illness, lack of feed, abundance of feed, time of year, age of mare, placentitis, etc. Inducing the pregnant mare is rarely recommended as well. There are very specific parameters that must be in place before it is recommended to even consider inducing labor.
