If a Paint dad and Paint mom (who is gaited) have a Paint foal who trots, what is the baby called? Spotted Saddle? Or just a Paint? Or a Paint/TWH? And can a horse be TAUGHT to gait? I always thought no but someone told me different...?

It's a PINTO, not a paint. Paint is a registered breed- pinto is a color |

If both parents are registered Paints, the foal is a Paint. No they can't really be taught to gate if they don't do it at least some naturally.

I might be wrong on this but I think they're only called SSH's (spotted saddle horses) when they're gaited. Pinto would be the correct term for the parents, like someone else said unless they are registered with the APHA they're not paints. Paint is a breed that's founded from it's own foundation stock and then has QH and TB in the lines. Anything gaited wouldn't be registered or registerable as one. My vote is a SSH if it can gait, if not walker/pinto cross lol. If a horse is not at least somewhat gaited naturally you cannot train them to do the walk, you could probably train them to rack but I'm not sure on that one. It is probably better off not doing that though, if they don't do it naturally the things that would have to be done to get it to gait are something I wouldn't even want to mess with.

A Paint is registered with the APHA out of approved bloodlines. It technically doesn't even need to have spots to be registered APHA. The PtHA registered Pintos. A registered Pinto can be grade, or it can be dual-registered. A Saddlebred could be registered Pinto and ASHA for example. So could a Paint, a Thoroughbred, a Miniature Horse, and many others.
