I'm wondering if she isn't really a brown, and a parent was mislabled as sorrel when it was a soft brown, because it wasn't the "common" brown color. I haven't looked at her ped, but I will because I'm really currious. Also, if she is a brown, what a find for the genetic research going on!

edited to ad: she also seems to have the pangare around the muzzle and flanks/belly area which could influence the legs. I'm liking brown as an option here, but I could be all wet, LOL.

So a horse can carry the silver gene but it does not express as it does on a black based horse.

If she is indeed a chestnut.... then those smutty looks aren't coming from silver.
Right, silver hides in a redhead.

I looked at the pedigree and I only see the possibility of chestnut.

I agree with those who said pangare. Around her muzzle and eyes, lower legs, and near her flank the coat color is very light. But if you don't want to have her tested, there's really no way we can know for sure.

yeah the weird thing is that I was bathing her the other day and she has some strange dark (black) markings coming in on her back legs. her colt the back of his hind quarters is going black! also if she is a chestnut WITH the silver gene and she has a black mane it may not show on her sorrel base BUT could show if she originally had a black mane and tail seeing as the silver gene does affect the black... so maybe she has more than one or two genes affecting her here. it appears what ever she has going on is VERY dominant cause her colt appears to be heading for the same direction!

thanks
Nikki

There is no way your mare would originally have a black mane and tail if she is sorrel... It does not matter what kind of sorrel she is... the silver gene will not show on sorrel.

What color are the offspring she has had and what color is their sire?

Do you have photos of her sire and dam?

I really do not think that she is silver. I have searched and searched the horses in the pedigree and in order for her to have the silver gene her sire or dam would have to have it also. I am not seeing it.

I did find a daughter of hers... Pinto horse For Sale in Michigan

Are the black hairs that some chestnuts have in their mane and tail affected by the silver gene?

banat, chestnuts don't have black hairs, ever - they have no gene that makes black pigment. If you see "black" on a chestnut, it's really a dark red. So no, not affected by silver
