Gelding Question*update pics* new update post #26.

ok well i finally got the vet out to geld spook only took 4 different times to get her to do it. well my question is how big are the incisions supposed to be?? and also where should they have been located? the reason im asking it when copper was gelded the incision was large and on the bottom of the sac. copper was fine no swelling nothing. but spooks are small adn on the sides. the thing bothers me is that the blood has pooled into the sac adn it dont even look like he was gelded i mean i know he was i have the "marbles" so to speak but still. i hosed him out a lil cuz of a slight case of swelling but i just dont see how the blood is gonna drain with the incisions being on the sides.

am i just being silly worrying about that?

I would think it should be draining. Is he walking around. That helps too. I made sure my gelding walked at least an hour...twice a day. Maybe give the vet a quick call if there is no drainage.

It's a good idea to put him with a horse who will keep him moving. Not an aggressive one, but one that will herd him a bit.

I'd think the incision on the bottom would allow for better drainage. But, I don't know for sure.

I had a colt gelded a couple of years ago and he didn't drain and his sack swelled quite a lot. He ended up with an infection and fever and I had to have the vet back again for anti inflammatories and antibiotics. It is quite warm at the moment for the vet to have gelded him, my vets try to avoid the warmer weather because of the files and the increased risk of infection.
If you think that he has swelled more than normal, I would call the vet and ask for their advice.

well i went out to the barn and as we were pulling up i was looking for spook in his pasture but i couldnt find him i was thinking oh no now what. hehehe the little sneak somehow opened the lock on the gate and got out well at least he didnt go far. he was in the pig side of the barn. boy did he have a sheepish look on his face wen i walked up and called him. he turned around adn gave me the it wasnt me i swear look and hung his head in shame as he came over to me.

the swelling has disappeared and the blood pocket in the sac has drained.

we have a huge tree grove in the pasture thats where she did the work. not to mention it was quite cool today in fact i was actually a lil chilly out there. the good thing is we have great fly control out here between traps and fly predators we have very few flies other then the deer flies. ewww.

When Justin was gelded last year, he had one incision on the bottom. Cruiser was gelded a couple of months ago and my vet made two incisions with him. Same vet did both gelds. I asked the same question. Justin's testies were bigger and therefore he could get to both of them easier and only made one insicion. Cruiser had smaller ones so my vet made two seperate incisions. Cruiser also was a bleeder so he actually had stitches to sew the cords closed after removing each testie. I actually had less swelling with Cruiser's geld than I did with Justin's.
I cold hosed both of my boys. Not directly on the incisions, but holding the hose with no pressure above the sheath area and letting the water run down over the incisions. My vet had me keep Cruiser stalled for 24 hours to allow some clotting before starting to work him. Had to do with the stitches and him being a bleeder.
Glad to hear that his swelling has gone down. I noticed the most swelling a few days after the geld. Poor babies!!
