Post Gelding Effective Immediately?

When a stallion is gelded, doesn't that mean that his ability to procreate ENDS at that point?

Someone just mentioned that when gelding an older stud (6-10yrs), he will still be able to breed for up to 6 months!

This can't be true...?

Hi Miss Bandit. When a horse is gelded the test icles are removed along with the epididymus which is really attached to the test icle. The epididymus is important because it stores the matured sperm until ejacu lation. Therefore if you remove these parts the stud/colt can not produce offspring immediatly. If the job is done correctly. The stud may still act like a stallion because the testosterone from the test icle may take a while to wear off(learned behavior may also play a role)The stud may even still try to breed but he won't be able to get a mare pregnant. I think the person your talking about was wrong unless they were talking about the testosterone's lasting effects. I'm not even really sure how long those effects would last. I wouldn't think 6 months. Does this help?
P.S. I put spaces in the words because I didn't know if they would be edited out.

I have always heard that they're still fertile for 1-4 months.

I was always told by my vets that they can still impregnate a mare for approx one month after the gelding took place, better to be safe than sorry and keep him away from any mares until a couple of months after the gelding occurs wink

ideally the whole reproductive system except the bottom part of the reproductive tract should be removed so the horse should be immediately infertile. If the horse has no testicles he immediately loses the ability to produce sperm so becomes infertile.
better safe than sorry though.

horses who have gelded recently can and have impregnated mares. it's due to the presence of the ampulla, a sperm reservoir at the end of the vas deferens.the ampulla isn't removed during gelding, so he can potentially settle a mare for up to one month after castration. after that time, the sperm stored are not viable.

The stallion does have sperm still up in the tracts above the epididymus. It takes somewhere around 30 days for a sperm cell to expire. So any sperm that are in the tract aren't removed. Most vets say to keep a horse out of a mare herd until after about 30 days to be sure.

Any gelding that impregnantes a mare after 2 months, still has a testical floating somewhere.
