![]() ![]() | Gelded Males are they still Fertile
Was wondering if they still might have some sperm some time after having been gelded and be able to breed still?

maybe if they are proud cut, but i have never heard of any incidents like that. i know that when my mares are in heat, they rub on my gelding,a nd he sniffs, but that's all he does. he actually seems to get annoyed. BUT, my aunts appy gelding he would actually try to mount and breed, but he was cut. so i don't really know, but have never heard of this.

It's not too common to have a true proud cut gelding that can impregnate a mare. But, it can happen.

Talking about a youngster that was just cut a week ago. Might there still be some live sperm? If so how long after being gelded might he still be fertile?

Yes, it can take 30 days for all the sperm in the "track" to completely be gone. The Epididymus (storage area) and Testes (production area) are 100% removed. But there are some lingering sperm in the tracks still as a possibility. So plan on having a recently gelded stallion separate 30-60 days from a mare. Also testosterone takes that long to start diluting out. So you won't have the aggressiveness of a stallion as much anymore after that time. (learned behavior asside)

Oh, okay. I thought that you just meant a proud cut gelding, not a recently cut one. Well, in that case, what BW said!

LOL, yep, i agree. i didn't know it was still in the tract, but i guess it makes sense, kinda like humans when that happens.(sorry if that was offensive, but just saying it made sense considering)

MMM I wonder if he'll be covering all my mares and get them set up with his beautiful pure arabian stock? He was jumping this one mare already, I wonder if he'll be saving me some stud fees?

It can take up to two months for the sperm cells remaining in the horse's tracts to die. One week later and he's mounting mares? That's a recipe for disaster, if you ask me. If he was gelded, he was probably gelded for a reason, and getting unintentional babies from him is not a good thing |
