Gawky + Awkward = Hopefully Cute?

Hi, there. I have VERY LIMITED experience with colts, etc. My husband got me a blue roan colt back in January. He's 11 months old now and I ADORE this guy. He's fearless and friendly at the same time. He shows lots of potential according to those in-the-know that have spent time around him. I think he will make a great horse when he matures because he's really outgoing and not scared of anything. He even frolics through sprinklers. LOL Despite my fondness for him, I do think he's kinda um, beauty challenged. He looks all gawky and awkward. His face is really long and skinny. He seems clumsy and kinda discombobulated, too. Like his joints are too big for his legs. Do yearlings usually go through a stage where they might be pretty weird looking? And if so, do you think he might mature into a better looking horse. Tell me what you think. (Either way, he's still really, really neat.)

This is TOTALLY normal!!! ALL yearlings go through what we affectionately call "the yearling fuglies". :-)

Thanks so much for the replies. I was secretly hoping that he really wasn't going to stay looking this way forever. I thought, "this is strange, he was so adorable at the weanling stage.. hehehehehe.

Awww he's a sweet faced yearling, and it's totally normal for them to look out of preportion at that age, it's the gawky stage of horse's growing up!

I am sure he will mature into a georgious horse, not that he is not cute as ever now!

What a nice gift for your husband to get for you! Lucky you!

Oh yeah, my prized yearling colt is so ugly right now that I won't even take a picture of him. I keep looking at him and telling myself to blur my vision until he's three lol. Then there's my non-horsey Husband who looks at him and keeps asking me if I'm sure he's a good choice. Who can blame him lol, those big joints, rump high, long funny moving legs, still short neck... He looks just awful.

Your guy is cute, he'll get better, trust me he'll outgrow this stage.

Think of it like a teenaged boy, they get all gauky looking with feet and arms too big for their bodies, tripping over shadows and still managing to eat you out of house and home lol. Then all of a sudden they're not quite to disproportioned any longer and actually look like all their parts fit together.

It will pass.

Yeah, I've raised a couple of the teenage variety already. I remember that stage all too well. LOL I was hoping it was the same with horses.

He already had three horses when we got married. (There's were I was really lucky.) I bugged him for one of my own and I think he got Coal just to shut me up. Since then, he's got me two more. Apparently, I'm quite good at nagging the husband to buy horses. I told him it was either a couple more horses or remodel the house.
