Relay race is a fun one. Since they are going at the most 2 at a time its pretty safe. Just set a couple of barrels up, put brushes on them, and split the kids into two groups. They then go retreive the brush, and hand it off to a partner who takes it back down to the barrel.

Another good one is the ribbon race. Two kids form a team. They then receive a ribbon that they must carry between them. They then have to race down to a barrel and go around it and race back, without dropping or breaking the ribbon. This one really teaches them to control the gaits of their horses.

OOOh! Ribbon race is so fun to watch at the open shows! Especially the little 5 year olds on the ponies!

I like the dollar game. The students must ride bareback, and place a dollar bill under their thigh. They must circle the arena each way at each gait without dropping the ribbon. If they can do it, they can keep the dollar.

Thanx lots for the ideas, I liked the ribbon relay race, playing tag with my alpha mare would be just the excuse she needed to make mean scarey faces at the other mare"peons," and scare them off with a little kid hanging on. Most of the ideas were really great, red light green light is an all time gas. One kid kept on going on red I'm sure on purpose just the trot back to the starting line.

Kids on trail rides do that too, they hang back and wait for everyone to get way ahead of them, just so they can trot up to the last horse!
I am glad that you had fun, sounds like the kids had fun too!

some games i have palyed is the flag race were you put a flag on one barell in a bucket, person picks up the flag, and goes and puts it in the other bucket. phone book relay, you have to run down to a phone book find your number and run back. musical socks, every one places a sock on the rail and when you play music everybody starts to walk around, when the music stops every body runs to get a sock, at the end of the round one sock is takin away and the player without a sock is eliminated. a relly good one to improve riding skills is the toilet paper game. you pair up every one in your class and give them a strip of toilet paper and they have to walk, circle, and maybe even trot depending on the level of riders they might even be able to canter. the people who rip there paper are out the last team with paper intact wins. i hope you have fun.
