Fuzzy mane

i have a quarter horse that i show in AQHA shows regularly. every winter he grows this huge fuzzy out-of-control mane that drives me nuts. the really bad thing is that my baby absolutely HATES having his mane pulled and will get really upset if you try. however, i need to find a way to thin his mane down, because it looks really sloppy in the show ring when the bands dont hold it in. some people have suggested letting his mane grow out since that seems to be getting popular but i still like bands. does anyone have any suggestions of how to thin his mane out without pulling it?
