Furacin Causes ProudFlesh?!!!!

So today I was checking on my Markie mare in her pasture and another person who keeps her horse there had just ripped off half his heel and part of his foot while trailering. So I stayed and helped her out for 2 hours, handing the vet stuff and holding a flashlight for them. Well I asked what she would put on a cut seeing as my new horse has a large scrape up his leg. I asked her about furacin since that is what I have been using and said that it helps proud flesh form. She suggested something veragel or something. It's swiss. Anyone know what it is called? I can't remember. I really want to get some but can't remember what it's called!!!
What type of ointment do you use on your horses?

we always use bag balm or furazone...i have never heard of it causing proud flesh...after it is healed, you can try MTG as it will help the hair grow back

Lower extremity wounds are more likely to develop proud flesh, and furazone is likely to encourage that even more. Furazone also is a carcinogen, at least in the lab, so besides the fact that I never used it anyway, that's even more reason to not use it.

I use Dynamite Wound Balm or Wound Salve.

Precisely why I don't use it either.

I've always found the Cut Heal products to work wonders. I used it on a horse with a terrible cut that I was caring for. Her owner had left Furazone for me to use...poor horses wound was getting infected. I cleaned it out good and applied the Cut Heal powder followed by the spray and it took the infection right away. When the owner got back, I told her what I'd done...and she bought the Cut Heal from me. The mare never developed proud flesh. And let me tell you...this wound was horrible! She'd cut the front of her hock on barbed wire. I had pictures, but it's been about 2 years and I can't seem to find them. If I do, I'll be sure to post them.

THanks for the replies guys. My mom actually went out and found the swiss stuff. It's called VermaGel. I am gonna try it. I have heard of a few people using it and thinking it's awesome, (including vets)
