Fur Coat

its been getting pretty darn cold here in CT.(15-20 degrees F at night and the days are like 40's to low 50's)

Fiona cant have a blanket since she'll be having her baby when its still cold so she needs the fur coat and the foal could get caught in the leg straps if she births w/ it on.

thing is...Fiona doesnt have a fur coat yet!! its still just like her summer coat, the other horses have their fur coats(even ones WITH blankets) becuz Fiona doesnt have a fur coat she didnt get to go outside the other day cuz it was very windy and it made it freezing.

Fiona is from colorado(near the mountains) and they have harsh winters. last year Fiona didnt "fuzz" up until February and she only got like 1/2 inch of one. do u think that since she's used to a very harsh winter her body can hold up against a new england winter? or could there maybe be something wrong? i'm very worried since i cant put a blanket on her and i dont want her to get sick

Might have something to do with the pregnancy

Thats too bad baby has to be born in such cold. Do you have a barn? Mabee you could insulate it and boarded it up more and put hay or staw bales around to keep the heat in. Or could you monitor her and keep a blanket on her and if you think shes foaling or could foal take it off. Thats pretty iffy though I know how mares and foaling is LOL!
But what about cutting the back straps off, I have a blanket that doesnt have back straps you just have to adjust it more, but it was ok, and its not for a long time. You can always sew them back on after.

Hmmm thats all I can think of!

I would put her outside in the cold for the day, so they can get winter coat.
If you just leave her inside where it warm, there is no point of growing a winter coat.
My gelding grew 2 inches of thick coat overnight, because one night got really cold.

Horses usually get their winter coat as the days get shorter, not as it gets colder. Some of our drafts will start getting theirs in Septmeber. She probably just does not need the heavy coat. You said she was used to hard winters in the mountains, her body is probably just acclimated. I would not worry about it.
Some horses are just hardier than others.

thank you drafts

mtroika- i dont want her used to a blanket and then take it off when she's having the foal. and its either have the baby born when it'll warm up after a few weeks, or have it too small for the real winter to hit. our vet told us that its the best time for a foal to be born
