Well, the fastest way and easiest way to get 'that show tail' is to buy a tail extension. ![]() The other way is to care intensely for the natural tail. That requires wrapping, grooming, proper feed and conditioning. Very high maintenance.

Like HJ said, extensions are the quick way. Personally, I prefer to care for my horse's tail so I don't need to waste money on extensions & time putting them on. I actually find it pretty quick & easy to care for my horse's tail. I trim it maybe every two months and brush it out at least twice a week. I also apply coconut oil every now and then. It stays tangle-free and has gotten nice and thick (sorry, it's not the best picture): |

I agree with both HJ and Paintyourworld. Start with nutrition and work your way to maintenence-supplements are usually not going to meet that requirement. The appy show barn I rode and worked at had lovely tails on all their horses-and although that is partially genetics, even the horses with thinner tails improved dramatically under their routine. They washed tails once a week with mild shampoo(baby shampoo works well), and used Mega-tek conditioner, it was kept in a tailbag constantly and carefully picked through. It may be a good idea to add in a deep conditioner, Coconut oil, Emu oil(more expensive), or Jojoba oil are good for that. Or you could try some MTG-which always yeilds good results, it's just smelly.

a tail extension, plus good care for your horses own tail. even when i have a horse with their own great tail, i still use an extension on everything. unless you have one with a white tail, they are not that expensive! ( i sell my regular colors in full pound for $100)

Hairspray at the bottom of the tail will make it seem fuller, not sure about longer

Technically, the fullness you're looking for is due to more hairs being longer. Not saying drag-on-the-ground long, just more even. My horse has a short tail (not even hock length), and it was pretty thin and scraggly when we bought her last summer. Now it's not so much LONGER (maybe a couple inches), but it's WAY thicker, as there's more hair that's not breaking off, creating the stringy look. I don't think I've washed her tail yet, but I've used MTG since January, it seems to have helped. Before that I think I used Lazer Sheen just to keep it from tangling....recently I started trying coconut oil in an effort to condition the hair so it doesn't break as easily. I try to not mix products, and given time and/or rain to wear or rinse the stuff off before using something different, it's worked alright for me. I'm still hoping that her tail will get longer, but she's got a really short docked tailbone, so it may never even get to hock length. Good luck!

I do nothing to my horses tails. The only time they are brushed out is when the tail is clean and conditioned. Sometimes less is more. The best thing you can possible do to get a fuller, more healthy is to make sure you are feeding a well balanced diet.
