From pasture to grain. concerned....

I just bought a 4 yr old paint mare. She came from a huge breeding farm where most of their stock is on nothing but grass all the time. My veterinarian told me to just start by giving her lots of hay when she comes in at night, and then let her be out all day in the paddock with some hay thrown out there too. He also told me that after she gets into a little bit of work just start by giving her a couple of handfulls of feed twice per day.

She is doing great, I've really progressed with her. She is now eating two handfulls of grain twice per day, with her probiotic supplement, free choice hay and about 8 hours of turnout. My only concern is that she is starting to look a little bit lean and i dont want to increase grain too fast. Id rather her not get a whole lot of grain until shes in major work. Any suggestions? Am I feeding her enough?

How much hay is she getting, in lb?

As a 4yo she's still growing, so I'd rather see her a little lean at this point. When you say she's looking a "little bit lean", can you define that? Does this mean you can see her ribs? Is she drinking enough? Often dehydration can look like the horse has lost weight.

you can throw in a conditioning supplement like blue chip that will add weight without being a large volume of concentrates that might upset her gut.
