Friend Wanted Me To Ask: Good Cross For Mare? *Wyldterv, Arabkid, ex*

A friend of mine wanted me to ask any arabian breeders/anyone knowledgable with the arabian breed on who may cross well with her mare.

Also, anyone else that looks at this thread, do you think there are any other "breeds" or stallions that may cross well with this mare? She would like the foal registered with the Warmblood Registry, thats her only concern. She did not state what she wanted to do with the foal, but she does dressage, and jumping so I am sure a foal that is good for any of those events would be good.

Here is some info she gave me: Note: I did tell her that you DO NOT have to stay away from the halter arabians to get a performance horse lol

I have an Oldenburg/TB(Mannhattan, and my OTTB) mare that I am *thinking* of breeding next year. I want her shown a bit more before though. However, I am having trouble coming up with good crosses for her.

I want the foal to be registered in the Warmblood registry(will have the foal tested alongside her as a 3 month old).

My trainer feels an arabian would mix really well with her. I have looked and found quite a few nice Hanoverians that I feel would go great with her body type. One of them I have had my eye on for awhile, he has had the 100 day stallion test and passed with flying colors.

I don't know much about arabian lines...for those that know more, what kind of arabian lines would be most appropriate for a Dressage foal(what lines should I stay away from...I heard you should stay away from halter lines if you want a riding horse?)?

She is a large-bodied mare, I don't think another large bodied horse would mix well with her.

She is super fancy, I really like her.

The Arab/Warmblood crosses are becoming quite popular. I think if she's a little skittish about the halter type horses she might considering going more along the Polish lines...as they tend to be a stouter horse. My little Polish boy is quite a little tank but still retains a lot of the refinement of some of his previous Egyptian lines, and he's got movement and felxibility to boot.

I am not big on Arab crosses in general, so my personal preference would be to breed her back to a lighter Oldenburg stallion. But it's up to her if she wants that size and substance in the foal or if she'd like something a little smaller and lighter.

It really depends on what she wants out of the foal... BUT if she wants a nice dressage prospect, there are several different Arabian Stallions that pop to mind instantly for me... some of which are TOP RATED on the dressage circuits.

I'm not sure what the various Warmblood 'registry' rules are, so she'd need to research that. BUT she coudl definately register the foal 1/2 Arab and the Arab and 1/2 Arab Sport Horse Market is really taking off and turning into a $$$ maker for the right crosses.

The mare would cross nicely with a couple of different stallions I can think of off the top of my head, but again, depends on if she wants more movement (dressage) or more Jumper as to what direction I'd head.

Right now my Dressage instructor and I are looking at a 1/2 Arab 1/2 WB gelding for a new 'project' horse, get him trained up to level 2 or 3 and then sell him.

Oooh NICE mare, very nice lines on that stallion. An arab will reduce her bulk, improve her movement and produce a nice lightweight sportshorse.
I would tell your friend to put her on a diet to get some of that weight off before trying to get her pregnant.
For sports horse crosses I really like horses from the Huckleberry Bey line.
I would also tell your friend to look seriously at a few TB stallions as well, A 3/4 TB is highly marketable and produces a good performance foal. The foal is also more likely to be allowed in a warmblood registry as a 3/4 TB than a 1/2 arab.
The best thing for her to do is make sure whatever stallion she picks is approved for the registry she wishes to enter the foal in.

This is a nice looking mare. I have a favorite Hano stally that I think would go FAB with her...and his stud fee is VERY reasonable. He's the son of the very well known "Pablo". His name is Paparazzo...check him out!

I have been talking to the lady, she is *trying* to join so she can give some more info but until then here is what she has told me!

I agree she needs to lose some weight. I will say when she is moving her belly DOES come up.

If you look up her half brother Morocco, she is built very similar to him(click 'photos' to see more of him):

http://www.dressagestallion.com/

Someone mentioned if I am interested in jumping or Dressage. The foal will be more for dressage. However, I am looking at some jumping stallions.

I wouldn't mind a more 'forward' mind(she is quiet and very sweet...but she can, at times, be on the lazy side), and a more leggy foal(I am sure you have noticed she doesn't have very long legs, although, she is about 16hh).

I really like that stud, Paparazzo. BEAUTIFUL mover, I am going to write his name down so I don't forget(how could you forget that stud though )

Another stud I was looking at was this guy, Raffaello:

http://www.synergysporthorses.net/raffaello.htm

Seems to have a good mind, like his conformation, and he is not too large(he is tall, but not too bulky).

Raffaello is one of my favorite stallions!!!

That mare is gorgeous!!

I am still not a very big fan of some x arabians...but it also depends on the horse as in any breed!

Good Luck to your friend!

I just skimmed the posts, but the Arab would need to be approved for the WB registry. Not just approved, but fully licensed. If the mare isn't even registered, she will have a hard time getting the foal even recorded with an applicable registry.

There are some half arabs that are approved. I'd REALLY look into a trakehner with a lot of arab blood. I think that would be a great cross for this mare-- add refinement as well as a bit of spunk.

Or even a Shagya stud...The owner of this stud wanted to lease my mare. She is a SUPER nice lady and the stud is phenominal.

I would have to say, for a big mare like this, your best bet would be an Arab, Thoroughbred, or a lighter Trakehner stallion. You'd need a breed such as these to get a foal that wouldn't be so bulky. There are some Trak/arab studs out there that would foot the bill here, and some full Traks as well. That way you would be staying warmblood if that's what you want. The only problem with the arabian stallions although it makes for a nice cross IMO, is that there just isn't the market for an arab/warmblood in the h/j and dressage worlds as there is with full warmblood or even tb/warmbloods. (They are marketable in the arab sporthorse world though. ) But, would the foal be to sell or to keep, as that makes a big difference.

I will say.. gorgeous mare!
and Rafaello.. I ahve always liked him!
I have seen him in person a few times.. he is GORGEOUS and seemed level headed and in his stall he was sweet and relaxed.
I saw him at a stallion showcase.
