Free Spirit Arabian Horse Sanctuary

I did some fishing after a post or 2 piqued my curiosity in this thread.

Possible SCAM alert

What I have found seems to verify that this was not a genuine place for horses to be rehomed.

I found this by doing a google. It is from another forum so I will not break the rules but will copy and paste some of the information from there as I would like to alert any of our members who may or may know someone who has given them a horse.

These are posts by one person, obviously very involved.

We just got two precious older ladies out of this place - they are GAUNT! This place JUST posted a solicitation for help on CraigsList - LA - but these horses, and those still there, aren't JUST NOW out of hay. It takes a while to starve horses this badly! We have some photos of the two girls who are now safely out of there, and Marci says she has more photos of at least some of the other horses. We're working with the Inyo County authorities to step in (they indicate they've been working on this for a while, but so far haven't intervened). Please don't fall for that ad on CL - any help sent directly to them probably WON'T go to help the horses!

I'm hearing not-nice things about the folks behind this. If anyone knows people who have placed horses there, please LET THEM KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON! We need pressure and eyes on and anything we can do to get the authorities to intervene, and I fear we're going to need homes (temporary or long-term) for the horses that need help.

This is going from bad to worse... I understand cruelty charges have now been lodged, but the local A/C isn't exactly set up to handle horses. There evidently are 14 horses in need. Gail did some digging, and found that this gal was trying to sell the horses placed with them for $700/each on an earlier craigslist post. Since someone has been playing with the web site, removing some content, locating people who placed their horses with them is a big problem. I've been in contact with some folks in the area, and we're trying to get the word out to line up fosters, help, etc.

A/C was out there today, checked things out, and posted a 48 hour notice (no one there) regarding two that are nearly as bad as the two we've already pulled. We hope to get those two out of there promptly. I have an offer to foster those two if push comes to shove (not that she has any business adding more to her already-full table).

This is one of the replies.

OMG, Carol, I've never seen a horse that bad, and I've seen a whole bunch of starving horses!

Seems like some of us were quite right to be smelling fish originally.

Is it full moon time again? Did the cereal truck overturn and fruitloops got spilt?

Just to bump this up - we've now gotten the remaining horses out of this place, and they are currently being cared for in Inyokern. We have 8 (the recorded owner of a mother/daughter pair reclaimed her horses, and a couple of the others which were in acceptable shape evidently were sold before we intervened.

The folks in Inyokern have been incredibly generous in offering both financial help and 'labor' in the major effort to care for and rehab these arabians. We have placed one and are working on a couple of other homes that appear to be excellent. The vet is arriving at noon today for a detailed examination and evaluation.

Please take a look at the TIER Horses in Need page for pictures and more on this effort: http://www.tierrescue.org/HorsesInNeed.htm

Any help would be MORE than welcome! thanks in advance!

I read about the horses in California, it is sad what people will do these days. To portray yourself as a rescue and then treat the horses worse than they were to begin with, is just plain selfish. I own horses myself, probably more than I should, but mine are fed every day no matter what. I also foster for a local rescue, whenever they are over run with horses (which seems to be all the time). Things are going to get much worse over the next year, especially if the ban on shipping horses out of the country for slaughter is put into place (I do not believe in slaughter, but it does have a place if done correctly and humanely).

Please understand that this place wasn't a rescue. They called themselves a 'sanctuary', but at least some of the horses placed with them initially were in beautiful condition and just needed a safe place to 'be' in a pinch...But this 'sanctuary', even asking for papers, never transferred them and they were running an unregistered stallion (which I know about, and which had originally been sold as a to-be-gelded colt with transfer of eligible but unregistered foal and all other necessary paperwork but was never gelded or registered) out with the mares!

Carol, it is wonderful what you are doing for those poor horses. I find neglect of these animals abhorrent.

I hope they don't set up again.
