There is a lot of prepatory work in the bigger moves. Then there are a lot of phases in training a big move.
You need to get into a complete reining program.

Yupp I would recommend either getting together with someone that has started a reining horse or go to a trainer. Keep in mind a finished reining horse takes up to 18 months to fully train. Search the forums for how to teach to turnaround and stop, there are a few threads. Anywho welcome to the world of reining.

Reining is different from many other disciplines. There are several good reining trainers in California. Go take a lesson or two and be sure that you have the true want to to be a reiner. Making a reining horse out of the horse you have now may or may not be possible. You might spend less money buying a been there done that ready to go and show reiner that you can show now. If you are not an experienced reiner... and the horse is not finished that is going to set you way behind the curve as it is....

Reining is very very precise and competitive. Years ago a 70 would do you well... now that is a begining level score and you better be able to pull at least a plus or two to win.

Bottom line before reining a horse must be able to:
Cross over comfortably and move laterally in both directions.
Do flying lead changes.
Be able to park its but to stop. Be really rear driven.
Do a haunch turn in both directions.
Neck rein and be really soft in the bridle.

I look for all of that with the exception of the neck reining... before the horse is broke to ride. If a horse does not cross over and use its but to turn around I look for another horse. Many would be reiners do all those maneuvers when playing in the field. Also look at how the horse carries his head and the slope of the neck... the balance of the horse. I watch how the horse uses or doesn't use its hocks.

You can see the cross over from both directions....

Filly is rolling back on the fence...

You need to have your horse evaluated by a reining trainer before trying to teach it how to stop or spin. The horse must be fit enough for those tasks before doing and should not be stopped without proper slide plates on.

Also as stated so well by the poster above me... reiners are not made over night. My stallion was shown for several years before we earned a $1... He was in training for almost 3 years before we won money!

Highly recommend a trainer. Both for you and your horse. It's a fine art of just riding a reining horse. You'll have lots to learn and that's not even getting your horse trained. Suggest if possible to train with someone that has a few different trained reiners that they use to school students.

Training your horse to do reining that may require separate trainer. In addition, is your horse suited to do reining?

There are lot of reining trainers in California, suggest you contact your local reining organization California Reining Horse Association, CRHA, Reining, NRHA, Horses, Trainers, Stallions, Patterns, Challenge, NRHA Affiliate, Reining FAQ or National Reining Horse AssociationOfficial Website of the NRHA.

The problem is the ground you used was not suitable for the stopping and might have caused permanent damage to your horse.

I'm a bit confused by the double posting. Also, why do you have two accounts, or is it a cooincidence that someone else has an almost identical (and quite unusual) username and is posting nearly the same threads?
