Post for love of equestrian

Just the other day at a local cow barn i was asked why it was horses i was into when clearly they cannot produce money (these were milking cows) dumb founded i asked the man if he went out of his way to pamper, love and spoil each of his cows as horse lovers commonly do to horses, when he replied no i stated merely that its a passion borne into a horse-lover for horses themselves and the love companionship and copmpassion not to mention the hard work that goes into it....so he says "well thats the same with any animal, why horses? there so time and money consuming" i said "anyone can be a dog person but it takes someone special to be a horse-person"

good for you to say something like that. i would have said "don't even go there with me buddy". i've been in the dairy world with cattle they are time consuming too. they are money waisted too if they don't milk out like that should.

Autumn, why would you be mad? He was curious.

there are different mind sets for cattle and poultry and other livestock people that are WAY different than the average horse person.

In cattle, they PERFECT the breed, they PERFECT their herds. When a cow isn't producing, they are OUT of the herd. No breeding, just Yum Yums.

In horses, however, we use emotion to go OOOHHH, She's be a good momma! (though she's toe'd in, can't walk let alone run due to conformational problems), and they breed her and bring ANOTHER toe'd in critter that can't do anything either.

Same with studs. I've got X amount of money in this stud. Instead of cutting my losses and geld the brat, they BREED him trying to recoup their funds out.

Horse people are JUST PLAIN STUPID when looked at from the rest of the livestock world. the other people LAUGH at horse people when they look at the current results. We can change the horse world in less than 5 years!! But because horse people can't see beyond the nose on their face, we don't. There are some that do. BUT, you'll find they are cattle and other livestock people too. And they run their horse operation just the same. BUT, other horse people think they are SOO MEAN and CRUEL treating horses like...well...HORSES. And as a money scheme and a business, and not incorporate emotion into it. Which is the ONLY way to really be truely successful in the horse business!
