Foaling signs....

I know this has been talked about a time or two already, but how far in advance will the muscles around her tail soften up prior to foaling??

This is a great question. My mare is due on 12 mar and her rump is squishy already and her bags are big. When is your mare due?

A couple of our mares softened about 3 weeks prior to foaling and have been bagged as long as 3 weeks too.. Of course the one mare we've got due on the 16th is a little squishy, but she's also 24 yrs old. Hardly nothing for a bag and her "hoo hoo" hasn't relaxed at all either, but she firmly plants her butt under the two lights we've got on her stall to bake that little ******! LOL. 2 more weeks... just 2 LOUSY, LONG WEEKS! I want to put a little viewing window in her so we can see the little ******! LOL.

Well my mare in question has a full bag now, and her bum is getting squishy! This is the first year that I have had "foaling dates" as last year was first time to hand breed and actually keep track. This is her third foal so I dont know if she foals on time, ealy or late. Her due date is March 19th, and her early date is March 9th.

Also check her vulva. It will get longer...And if you really want to get personal...LOL If you open the vulva to see the inside color it will be more purple when the mare is really close. It's red/pink when they aren't ready. And watch for a dropped belly. The mare will have a sharp slope from the stifle area to the middle of her belly so her belly will be low and slow. Is she even on both sides or does she stick out on one side more then the other?
