Foal Watch! Question, Please Read

My Nieces Mare, Which We Werent Even Aware Was Pregnant, But Later Found Out Did Have Contact With A Stud, Started Bagging Up A Couple Of Weeks Ago. My Question Is How Long After She Starts To Bag Up Should It Take For Her To Foal.this Is Her Second Delivery. I Dont Remember Her Being Bagged Up That Long With The First.we R Soooo Ready. And No She Hasnt Even Started To Loosen Up Yet. But She Is Huge.i Dont See How She Could Go Much Longer.

start looking for waxing on the nipples also you may want to monitor her temp. some books say the temp may not change much before foaling. also try to find about last foal how long she went and try figure out when she was bred.

Keep and eye on her, the temp thing seemed to work with my mare, plus just keep a very close eye on her

Mares can start to bag up 4-6 weeks prior to foaling. Though some mares (I've heard this to be more so in maiden mares) that their bag will not fill until AFTER they foal.
Otherwise, look for her tail to be relaxed, for it to be jello like around her tail head, her vulva/"back end" will elongate, she maybe be a little snatchy at her feed, look at her teats- textbook routine says that mares will/should have a wax like substance on the end of their teats soon before foaling...though with our experiences with breeding our mares, we've had some that waxed on and off for a couple of days, had one that waxed then dripped milk...so it all varies mare to mare...but it's usually the same general routine/signs. Them rolling to help get the foal in position is another sign.

Best Wishes, keep us updated!

Also watch for sudden mood changes...I never rely on the waxing up because my mares have NEVER read that book! I bought a mare in March and in late May she started bagging up and she foaled a beautiful colt on June 14th.
The night before she foaled she started dripping milk...no wax! She also paced her paddock, which she never did before.
Hope some of this helps.

I just had a colt about16 days ago and let me tell you every sign that i was looking for did not happen. she never waxed and she never dripped altough i was able to milk her to see that she had milk she bagged up and then shrunk back did this for about a week or so and then she started to bag back up on a mon and continued to get bigger untill she delivered on a wed night. the only thing that she did that i look back now and think it was a sign that i missed late wed night when i checked her milk it started to turn white it had been clear up to this point.

the next baby though i will pay more attentions to the moons new moons , full moons!!!!! mine was born on the full and all of the baby's down the road where born with in three to four days of the new moon's.

good luck i know what you are going threw but isn't it great!!!!!!!!!!
can not wait to see pictures
