A chestnut (like your baby) will have the lighter legs as they go lower... You can see on this little guy that the bottom of his front legs are darker.

You can see the darker hairs on the back of this one's lower legs (but otherwise they look like chestnuts0

This thread has me laughing out loud, between the hoof color determing socks, 3WD's progressive hoof images that made me feel mashed into her horse's foot, and the color changing baby! (maybe I need more sleep)

That's because he also has dark hair, therefore dark skin, right at the coronet band.

It doesn't matter how much white is above the coronet band, it matters what color the skin is at the coronet band.

A brown muzzle, of whatever shade, doesn't tell much. And, chestnut will always stay chestnut, it just depends on the shade.

My friend owns her full brother. He was born chestnut and turned a nice dark bay.?
Nope, genetically impossible Chestnut cannot turn bay. Bay cannot turn chestnut. Now, what often happens is people see the lighter, tan/silver hairs on the lower legs, the mane and tail aren't always born black (but they don't come out "chestnut" either), and think "chestnut". A chestnut foal and a bay foal look very different, but sometimes you just have to see them side by side to see the difference. The silver/tan hairs on the lower legs of a bay foal shed out black.

You can't always get the pattern you are hoping for, but I have seen many solid chestnuts that turn at to be beautiful show horses!

I would just like to point out the difference in the colours here. This is a horse at the barn. She was born in 2005. In the first picture she is chestnut. She has the light chestnut legs. The chestnut tail & mane. Now (This picture was taken about 6 months ago) she is a bay. Please explain. I know the baby picture isn't the greatest picture.

She looks like a chesnut with a dark mane, I don't see dark points on the legs, plus her tail is still red. in the side profile
