Foal Heat Scours - Your Experience?

I was reading Blessed Are the Foals & saw something about foal heat scours AKA nine-day scours. The book gave me some information on it, but I would like to know more about them, what you think the underlying cause of them is, why they happen, how you treat the mare, how you treat the foal, you're overall experiences with them, & any other information you can give me on them. I am intrigued.

Our foal is going through this right now. It is worse when you breed late for a summer baby. He has it pretty bad. One night was so bad, he stunk so hardcore of rotten seeweed I almost vomitted when I would go near him.
Now he doesn't stink, he is just so raw and itchy on his poor little bum.
He's definately gotten used to getting his temp taken and cream rubbed all over his hind end!

I heard my trainer and another person speaking and she said that she dewormed the foals soon after birth and it really decreased the incidence of scours. I don't know if this is the same type of scours you are talking about or not. I also heard that it is caused by the heat (not sure if this is the term, it seemed to me that there was another word in front of heat) that mares go into 10 days after having the baby that can cause scours. I really don't know anything about it just stuff I either heard or read.

All my breeder friends who are also Dynamite users start the mare on the DynaPro (pro- and prebiotic) before the foal is born, and continue in good amounts for several weeks after. Not a one of them have had foal scours over many years and many mares/foals.

I have never had a foal with them....
I really believe it is because I give each newborn a tube of EQUINE E. COLI ENDOTOX Paste. It is an Equine Origin Antiserum used to prevent Endotoxemia and Diarrhea caused by E Coli in newborn foals. It is orally administer using the 10ml syringe to FOALS WITHIN 12 HOURS OF BIRTH.

When the mares go into their foal heat around 9-10 days after foaling the babies tend to scour. Some dont get them too bad others are horrible. For ours we back the mare off grain and treat the baby with Probios and Biosol. Some of them get very chapped behinds and we put udder cream or aloe heal on them.

We give the babies probios right after they are born. Seems to work pretty good.

Elle' did not get foal scours and has not had a day of diahreah yet... I gave her a foal probios/colostrum paste called "Foal A.S.A.P." immediately after birth and I also kept my stall and turn out area as clean as possible.
