Unhappy Flying Lead Changes

Hi,
I need to teach my horse flying lead changes by next spring! He knows how to do them but it been years, he can do simple lead changes but were going to be showing huge next spring and he needs to look more advanced, my trainer just does not have the time to help right now. Like I said, he has done them before but he refuses now. He has no feet problems, teeth are floated also. We don't have a arena but we do have a round pen.

I also have another question, he really needs to put his head down for pleasure in english and western, he can go in as much slack possible but does not put his head down! From a recent fall I broke my arm and its a horrid break and im hopping to get back on again soon, but I want to be prepared better with these sorta questions.

Some things you might want to know- my horse is quarter horse who is 14 years old, he is very sound and we do serious showing, he is very calm but can be high strung sometimes. Dont know if you want any of this info but just in case

Hmm. I don't have an answer for you... I have the same problem with the mare I ride. She only does flying changes when SHE wants to.

Considering you cant get his head down is a clear indication to me that you probably can't get him rounded up either, am I right? If this is the case its probably the reason why you can't get him to change leads.

You need body control, collection and impulsion in order to change leads. If you don't have this, you won't have a change.

So I'd work on everything else first then think about changing leads again. Can you get him to half pass at the canter? If you can't, achieve this first before thinking about changing leads again.

Why doesn't your trainer have time to help you? I'd be looking for a new trainer if I got that kind of response from them. There is a reason you are paying them, and unless they have issues going on in their family and such. If they simply have "too many horses" or "too many clients", I would be considering finding a new one.

Your trainer doesn't have time? That doesn't sound like she's your trainer (at the moment)

It does sound like there are other issues that are not just about the FLCs. The head position is one, and that goes back to Bernardo's post.

He can half pass at the trot and canter, he can collect himself, now if you mean by impulsion to expanded his strides, yes, he can easily do that on cue on all gaits, for body control, yes I believe I have that to, if you mean not flopping and legs a wiggling in the saddle, no I don't do that, when I ride im relaxed but not so relaxed that I flop if that makes sense lol . His head is down but it needs to go lower by a little. I would post pics to show a little better, but since I broke my arm I can't ride.If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. h and about my trainer, what I mean by "Does not have time" is that she does not want t waist her time with me because she believes my horse can't do them, but come on, he does them all the time in gymkhanas and is fine, he's done them before for her because she used to show him all the time and did them, which it makes me upset to think about because it makes me feel she just just does not want to for her own sake, yes she is busy but she always says he can't do them and I know he can, I have seen them do it! Sorry to go on about my trainer, but it feels good to get my feeling about.....

Thanks

I'm confused -you can't get pictures/video of what's going on because your arm is broken? But you still need to get him worked for next Spring? Are you riding him now, or is someone else? Your trainer?

If your trainer is taking that mentality, it's time to find a new one. Really. It doesn't matter at this point how much your trainer has taught you and/or your horse, it's apparent she doesn't have any interest in helping either of you now, for whatever reason.

I will try to get pics up, I am thinking about getting a new trainer, I don't really take pictures when I ride but I will as soon as possible. I want to start riding again this week but I need to ask my doctor first. I will talk to my parents, see what they say and hope its luck! Anyway is there a way I can get his head down and to do flying lead changes?

*EDIT* On the picture I meant raise outside REIN not LEG Sorry!

Actually, let me try with a lovely illustration and see if thats any easier ha:

Set up a pole. You're going to want to do a figure 8 at the very ends of the corners. You can begin with cantering, trotting right when you get to the pole, and as you canter out ask for your lead. After repeating that several times, canter your way through, follow what I wrote on the ugly drawing and ask for your change.

Sorry if I make no sense!
PM me if you have any other questions, good luck!
