Talking Flying Changes???

i was wondering if anyone knew how to explain how a flying change is done??i really want to work on this. she can change it after jumps but most horses can lol.

my trainer told me to simply place a pole on the ground go into it then while going over it open your whatever rein and go the other way.basically a figure of 8 until u can do this without a pole.is this a good way of doing it?

Hmm. Well to teach Apache, I would canter a circle, say, tracking left, on one end of the arena. Then, I'd push him out of the circle and head toward the opposite corner, bringing him back down to a trot and straightening him out. The horse must be straight and balanced so he can switch both his hind end and his front end all in a stride. Then, when I reach the corner, I drive him hard into my outside rein and close my inside leg on him, cue with my outside leg behind the girth, and pick up the canter in the opposite direction. I canter a circle on that end, and then repeat it.

Over time, you can reduce the trotting down the diagnol until eventually, you can start picking up flying lead changes. But the horse has to have a solid understanding of what you're asking him to do; repeat the excercise enough and he will start to anticipate- 'Oh, she's going to want me to be on the other lead when I canter again.' Once you take away those trot steps and ask for the opposite lead, he should know you want him on the other lead and chances are, he'll give it to ya.

I think someone else could better explain this than I, but I tried. lol

What your trainer said does work and it is a very good way of doing it. Put a pole in the middle od the ring and start cantering around and them stard to in a figure 8 when you are on the left lead and want to change ot the right come to the pole bending to the left then open your right rein kick left look right, step right and make your horse bend right all at once while you go over the pole. If your horse gets it give in a big pat and then do it to the right changeing to the left lead. If the don't get it do a circle to the right at one end of the ring asking for the changes. If your horse still won't get it take them back to a trot and pick up the right lead rigth away DO NOT LET THEM KEEP TROTING!!! It sould be like a correctionyou sould only go 1 stride in the trot.

Just keep doing this until you no longer need a pole

Your horse knows how to do them now , what you have to do is to ask in a way that he understands what you want. If he will take ither lead willingly now and will move off your leg ,simply use the same cue to change. You may be surprised . Good luck.
