Fly Spray Question

Okay. I just recently started boarding Jake at a stable, rather then my aunts. I am enjoying it, they have been good about putting his fly mask on etc. Now I have a question about fly spray.

I go to the barn everyday. While I am there, which is usually late afternoon, early evening, is it okay for me to put the fly spray on him? He goes outside from 2:00 in the afternoon until 7:00 in the morning, my choice. Do you think that if I spray him at 5:00 in the evening, that it will work the next day, in case he doesn't get sprayed again in the AM.

Thanks.

Lynda

Well.. I certaintly don't think it could hurt. I know that at my house the flys usually aren't bad during the night, but I still spray them before I put them up. Honestly, IMO (and correct me if I'm wrong) I don't think I've ever come across fly spray that lasts for more than a couple hours. I've tried a billion different kinds, and they all seem to only last a half hour if that.. so I honestly don't know if it would hold up until the next morning. But you never know until you try! Hope I helped a little bit! =)

THe problem with fly spray is that it wears off very easily. If you put it in on at night, chances are with him laying down, there really won't be much left on him by morning.
Those fly strips don't really work, at least the ones that I have seen don't work.

The ultimate fly protection is a fly sheet. They don't rub off and they also protect from the sun.

Great, thank you. I am glad I didn't waste my money. I am on Stateline right now placing an order for a fly sheet and a new mask (the longer one with the ears). Do you know of any other sites where it might be a little cheaper?

Thanks again.

That's where I got mine, I paid $25 for the Weatherbeeta sheet. You could do a google search for Weatherbeeta fly sheets and see what comes up. A lot of sites are probably selling last years inventory for a lot cheaper.

Is your sheet durable? Jake is outside a lot.

We actually use a pour on fly repellent. We pour some on the mane and the rest on the top of their butt. It's called BOSS. You only use 20 cc per horse ( less for smaller ones and babies.) After the first application you repeat in 2 weeks then only once a month. It's worked very well for us, but our horses are in alot of trees so fly sheets just get torn. Otherwise I was spraying twice sometimes 3 times a day, the sprays just don't last.
