flipping his head

What would cause my horse to keep flipping his head up and down. Stretching and turning his neck sideways? Could this be a toothe or ear ache? Or something hung in his throat? Need a little help on this one. Should I call in the vet?

I can't quite tell from the description if it might be this or not, but we had an old mare with idiopathetic headshaking.

When does he do it? When he has a bit in? When he's outside? Just any time?

He hasn't had a bit in for days. He just started it about 4hrs. ago and hasn't stopped yet. We do have a mare in the field. Someone said he may be smelling her coming into season. Not sure if she is or not. I have had her for 2 1/2 months. No signs of it though.

He's been constantly flipping his head like that for 4 hours straight? If so, I'd call the vet.

I would call the vet, too.

Something in his ear, axis out, atlys out, something stuck in his mouth, something stuck in his esophagus, got konked in the head, and more possibilities. It might be time to call the vet at least, and see if s/he recommends a small amount of bute or banamine as a test to see what the reaction is, or if something else can be easily done by you to start to judge how serious it may be.

Dusty needed his teeth floated. His cheeks were all tore up on the inside. His last owner must not have known the shape they were in. The vet check done before he was sold must not have been too good. Lesson learned. Have your own vet check before buying, unless you don't mind sinking the money into the horse you plan to buy. I love my Dusty and he was worth every penny. All 24330 of them.lol. Thanks again for all the help. I hope this will help someone in the future. Lori
