I have found the best way when these little critters come about is to take a damp cloth and wipe the ears clean. Then use a fly mask with ears on it. They seems to just keep coming back here even with fly spray .

You can use sprays if you really want to. I personally use Vaseline. I think it works best. If its the same sort of flies you are thinking of, then I use vaseline. They are really annoying to ME, let alone to the horse that has them in their ears.

SWAT is an actual wound cream that is fly repellent as well. I use it on all my mare's bumps and scrapes.

Ugg I hate those things. We get those gnats every year. I usually just smear swat in their ears. My vet told me not to spray fly spray in their ears because when they sweat it could irriate their ears if it drips down in the ear. But I never have a problem when I use the swat. I use the pink stuff and we always have a good laugh at how funny the horses look with pink ears lol

I have a horse that used to bleed inside his ears from those things biting him. I have used Swat too....I like the pink because I can see at a glance if it needs to be redone. I have also had good luck with wiping the ear down with baby oil....inside and around the edges...just don't use so much it runs down inside. But, ear masks work best. the best flay replellant I have found for this is the Farnam roll on. You can just roll it around the edges of the ear...even around their eyes without it dripping in. We use it for trail riding...goes great in your pocket or small trail bag.
