Flies & Worming for Preggers

Is there any difference between worming a open mare versus a pregnant mare? I currently worm Penny every three months, switching between ivermectin & pyrantel pamoate with Rotectin (formerly Rotation) brand. Should I worm her before her AI next Wednesday or Thursday, right before, after? I would love for her to take first try so I don't want to mess this up.

Also, how bout flies? I use some herbal stuff called Larry's Horse Spray. It seems to work well for Penny & I think I can continue to use it, but what are your takes on it? And how about Swat? I have a fly sheet & mask (when her's isn't taken off by her neighbor & deemed unuseable ) on her during the day. The spot-on fly repellants REALLY help, but I'm afraid they work too well.

Any help would be very appreciated!

Way back in the 90s (ha) when Image was pregnant, I continued to routinely deworm her and used fly spray. I just read labels to make sure the dewormers/sprays said "Safe for Pregnant and Lactating Mares."

You MUST read the best book ever written about breeding called "Blessed Are the Broodmares." I have a copy if you want to borrow it...I'll just need it back in 11 months once Penny's baby's on the ground since it's such an awesome book!

Haha, someone else recommended me that book! I guess it really is all that & a bag of chips! After checking out these pastures in Moorpark, I'll go on Amazon & order.

And thanks for that tidbit on Image & bug repellant.

My vet's recommendations is no wormer during the first 60 days after conception, 90 if your parasite load is low enough to allow it.

I worm on the heat cycle before breeding, then wait 60 days after conception. Then I worm every two months. One month before due date, and then within 12hours after birth with Ivermectin.

I rotate between generic Ivermectin, Equimax(when mare isn't pregnant, but I think it has been okayed for peg mars now), Anthecide, and Safegard.

Also, the foals are wormed every month until 1 year old, then go on an adult schedule.

Good luck with your mare!
