Could you then use paprika as an actual pain relief? Like say for arthritis or back pain in a horse?

Can you feed flax seed without anything else?
Do you have to feed it everyday or can you feed it 4 times a week? (my barn doesn't offer feeding for outdoor boarders)

Sorry I asked questions,
my thread didn't get any answers.

I think it contains a very small amount of Capsaicin, so I would think it wouldn't help. Drug tests are just super sensitive.

About ground flax seed:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/flaxseed/AN01258

http://www.lemelange.com/horse_herb_...st_control.htm

Putting whole flax seed in a coffee grinder will not lose nutrition for there isnt any catalyist to break down nutrients or alter nutrients or what have you. THe grinding of whole flax WILLL make it a bit easier to digest full benefit from it. If it is stablized it has a very much longer shelf life and if its stored whole it can have a good shelf life. Stablized boiled whole flax has a good refrigerator shelf life. However I do not recommendkeeping boil flax of any type longer than 24 to 48 hours. So I decided to contact my Vet in KY and he also stated that simply grinding up whole flax seed will not reduce nutrient contenet. He stated that Grinding flax seed and leaving it out for a time and is not stablized can begin to lose its nutrient content and spoil a little faster. He also stated that WHOLE flax seed has a long shelf life if kept in a dry cool place with out rodents, bugs and etc. Hes a flax seed using person himself and has been for a long time. ( I did not know he was but I do now)
The Omega 3 benefits are great esp for skin and hair qualilty and flax seed has shown positive qualities to aid in sand removal from the gut and lessen sand colic in horses.

Now if the flax seed is MILLED (extruded or pelletized and other heat processing of feeds), turned into a MEAL (grinding it in a coffee grounder is not tuning it into a meal because with mealing it its often done so with some heat to help remove exces moisture), BOILED, Not stablized, it Will, infact, cause the loss of nutrients due mostly to heat. Chemicaly altered can also deplete Flax seed of its nutrients. Flax seed also can off set the Calcium : Phosphorus ratio if fed in EXCESS. Flax seed is also low in lysine.

Feeding rate can be from 1 ounce a day up to 8 ounces a day. So that is a broad range to feed. Dr Slaughter (my Vet in KY) said that 2 to 3 ounces of ground up flax from whole flax seed will be more than enough and be just as beneficial.

I have not used flax.
Is that a Tablespoon?
Everyone else has said that they feed 1 teaspoon, Just wondering if it was a typo or what.
I want to start feeding it to my horse soon.

And about the flaxseed, I just read that its poisinious (sp) unless its boiled....
Is that true??
And is it just the same flaxseed that humans eat?

I use one tablespoon.

And actually, flax seed is poinsonous IF it is boiled. Or at least it can be. And, it can also lose a lot of its nutrition. I feed it whole.

This is excellent info about flax. I have been doing exactly that (using a coffee grinder) for my own personal use. I understand that the ground up flax keeps up to one month if you refrigerate it. Any longer and it will go rancid.
