flaky skin on neck under the mane

Noticed it today when I was brushing. There is some flaky skin under his mane. It's the only place on him. He got all agitated when I brushed him there, like it hurt? But, there is no bleeding or anything, no scabs. Any clue? I have MTG. Think that would hurt to put on it? Rest of him looks lovely, nice and glossy.

Could be lots of different things, I am prone to think it might be a touch or lice tht is usually where they show up first, and if that is its an easy fix, a lice powder can help or also just a double dose of ivermectrin and in 10 days another double dose. that way when the lice bites the mare the ivermectrin in the blood stream will kill the lice and it lasts long enought to kill any freshly hatched. Another thing it could be is an alergic reaction to something, or his skin could just be dry and a food supplement designed for this can help out on that. I am sure youwill get some more suggestions on it in this post. If you aren't sure about the cause check with a vet...because ther are many things that can cause this..

Sounds like "sweet itch" and MTG works great on it!

OK, my friend just looked at it. He said it was probably a touch of sweet itch. (It's not that noticeable--just to me cause I was picking at him like a little monkey. LOL) HGS strikes again as a great source of info! Thanks, guys.

make sure when you apply the MTG he won't be in direct sunlight or he may end up bald

Is it under the mane or in the mane?

Sweat Itch, in my experience, ususally presents as a thickening of the skin at the base of the mane, not the skin on the neck. Are there lots of midges where you are at the moment?

There have also been studies that say that the Omega 3's & 6's that you would get from flaxseed help with sweet itch http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/art...i?artid=227015
If you are interested in buying human grage Milled Flaxseed for your horse (that you can also use for yourself!) at a very reasonable price, let me know! The supplement company that I use for my horses sells it.

YIKES! I'll remember that. OMG. That would be terrible... This is actually under his mane. The vet is coming here in two days anyway so, I'll have him look at to be sure.

Just read the bottles LOL it states on there not to apply in direct sunlight or it may cause a reaction and the most common one I have heard is hair loss

I had some of the flakey skin under my horse's mane this year with a little of the loss of hair in the affected area......it appeared to me as "Sweet Itch"..in the end I use a bit of Betamethasone Valerate ointment at .1%. Which I rubbed into the area and in a very a short period of time the flakey skin recovered and the mane filled back in. This is not a recommentation merely what I did and the results I observed.
