Its really hard to maintain a nice coat in the winter. I personally body clip my horse, and it helps a lot, but I wouldn't reccomend doing that this close to spring. The key to a good coat is regular grooming, a curry comb and a shedding blade will do wonders when used every day I also keep a bottle with Healthy Hair Care spray nearby and use it generously...

If you add some vegetable oil to his feed it will help the dandruff. HOrses get dry skin in the winter just like humans do.

i have been told to use Infusium 23 for my horse's dandruff under his main and in his forelock. i plan on trying it once it warms up because he is kept outside. my sister uses it for her hair because she has dandruff, but she is always switching her shampoos and conditoners so i have no idea what is working on her.

It may not even be dandruff...it may just be dust/dirt being trapped by the long winter hairs -- I know my horses always look like they have dandruff in late winter, but in reality it is just 4 months of built-up dirt, because no matter how much I brush, I can never get it ALL out of the long winter hair without a bath (and I don't bathe during the winter). You can try bathing him if you want, but if it was me, I would just deal with it a little longer until it warms up and he sheds out -- then bathe him good, and see if it hasn't cleared up the problem.

I agree - I bet that it's mostly just the build up of dirt, natural oils, AND bedding Feeding corn oil and flax seeds are an inexpensive way to help if it is the coat... I also feed my horse MirraCoat which is a coat supplement with fatty-acids My horse's coat (under his blanket) always lookes good, but his neck and face always gets that dirty "dandruff" look The only place I've ever REALLY noticed dry skin (with my horse AND my friend's 2) was on the elbows... most horses who are groomed regularly and fed a good balanced diet usually don't have dry skin problems.
