There is no rule. I have had bales with 6 huge flakes and others with a dozen tiny ones.

The bales around here 120-140lb so they average 12-14 flakes.
Yeah, I guess you were riding, until you fell off.

Round bale? Square bale? 40lb square bale, 100lb square bale?

    # of flakes means diddly squat. Weigh the hay Or weigh the flakes. Feed your horse based on weight. Get average lb/flake from your average bale and base your feeding of it off of that. 1% minimally of your horses (desired) body weight, 2% preferably unless excess calories is an issue.

My 2 and 3 wires bales have 12-14 but since the 2 wire is so much smaller, they get about 4 large flakes, rather than 2 large flakes.

There are two flakes in each of my bales--oh wait, did you mean how many flakes of hay not how many flakey horses?? LOL

The answer is, it depends, and as JBandRio said, you need to go by weight because hay does not flake off in set amounts.

Hmmmm, since it is demonstrable that there are more flakes in California, it would stand to reason that there would be more flakes/bale in hay from that state. How many, would depend on how tight the baler is wound. Oh wait. It is California after all, and seemingly, nothing is wound tight there.

ROFLMAO Does that mean California peeps are flakier?
My 110 pound bales have about 14 flakes/bale, but it all deoends on the baler. Rule of thumb here is 1 bale/horse/week. Works out to 14-15 pounds/day. Sometimes the flakes are too big and have to be split and others need more than 1 flake. Like mentioned....it's the weight not the number of flakes.
