Here is a good page on mane care and braiding. The one you are talking about is called a continental braid.

What are you doing this style of braid for? I personally do not like it for showing, I prefer banding or the typical hunter braids. It is really a preferance thing though, and how it looks and accents different horses necks. What type of neck does your horse have? Is his/her mane long enough to do these types of braids? Play around with braids to see what looks best on your horse, and which you prefer to do.

Just doing it for a gaming show. Nothing fancy, but her mane is sooo long that she gets really hot under it so I like to put it up.

i did that braid for fair! It looked REALLY good on Apache. I think it depends on some horses though, like that horse in the article, i don't really like that on him/her. But everyone who walked by my stall stopped and said that it was BEAUTIFUL! it actually didn't take as long as I was thinking it would, it took me a half hour to 45 minutes at the MOST! So it didn't take too long. I also put Twinkle glitter in her mane and it was gorgeous! I think that would look pretty cool for gaming! I was going to braid her mane for gaming but i got too lazy..haha! :P
