And I just thought of this one. Since this is just an open show, do I need a show name?

I wouldn't really worry about a show name, just go for the experience. Don't expect a blue your first time out, everyone I know had a bad first show experience, so just brace yourself for the worst, try your best, and if/when you get a ribbon it'll be even better than if you expected it.

My best tip for a first show is just to try not to stress out. My trainer's always like "It's JUST a horse show" and I always give him a dirty look, LOL, but that's the truth. It's not the end of the world if you don't place. It's not even the end of the world if you fall off. No matter how you do you're going to learn a lot and have the opportunity to test yourself against others. Just have fun and roll with the punches and watch yourself get addicted to showing! LOL

Smile. Wear jeans, a cowboy hat, boots, and a nice button up shirt. Make sure it all goes together well. Make sure your boots match your belt, and wear a belt buckle if you have one. Youll be opening and closing a gate and walking over a small bridge. Im not sure what else. Be sure to relax, take deep breaths, and have fun!

It's hard to know what they'll have you do, but you'll see things like:
Gate (open & close while mounted)
Mail box (open the box, take out the mail, show it to judge, place back in the box and close it)
Bridge (usually plywood on the ground)
Walk or trot over ground poles (I've seen them where they have 4 poles and 1 laying across diagonally for walk poles)
Barrels/cones (weaving around them)
Canter from halt, then halt at sspecified point
Dismount/Remount (no help remounting)
Side-pass poles
Turn a 360 inside of a box (box is made of poles laid on the ground)
Back through poles (I've also seen it where the poles are leaned up against the fence and you have to back up to the fence)

I can't think of anything else off of the top of my head, but just to and have fun! If your horse has never done trail or seen obsticles like this, have patience with him because some of this stuff can be scary to a horse who isn't used to it. Practicing at home for some of these things is a good idea if possible. Just try to have a good time... when I do trail, if my horse has issues, I just laugh it off Good luck!!
