| Fire At Work- Article + Pictures! Several weeks ago I was sitting at my desk finishing up my work for the day. It was around 3 o’clock PM in the afternoon. Suddenly, I looked up and Tom was standing in the doorway of my office and somewhat calmly stated that there was a fire in the building. A few moments later, Joel from Delta Properties sprinted past my office and out toward the warehouse. Thinking it was a small, contained fire, I continued to answer phones and finish paperwork. Soon, I began to see mild panic on several faces around me, and detected a faint smell of smoke coming from the back. Eventually I found my way back to the large room that housed the fire. As I walked thru the plastic barrier I saw “Fireman Greg” standing on makeshift scaffolding and wielding a mere garden hose. Luckily with the help of several other Michigan PreStain employees, he was able to keep the fire under control until the fire department arrived several minutes later. The warehouse was evacuated and the majority of MPS employees lined the sidewalk in front of the building. The fire department sent several trucks, two of which were ladder trucks. They promptly set up a road block and extended the ladders and ascended to the burning roof. The fire was extinguished shortly after the fire department arrived, due in part to the quick reaction of many MPS people. Looking at the damaged area, it was very apparent that the fire could have quickly escalated into a massive blaze had it ignited the insulation and large quantity of wood stain located directly below the flames. Ironically, the fire was started by the roofers who were supposed to be making repairs to an already leaky roof. One of the roofers was using a blow torch and ignited some flammable material that quickly turned into a full blown fire. The damage was luckily limited to several broken windows, some charred roof and a big mess. Much of the insulation had been torn down to prevent the fire from spreading the blaze. Fortunately, there were no injuries sustained and there were still people in the building when the fire started. |
