Snickers and I have been having it kinda rough this season- she's aging (16) and it has really come down on me hard. It's made me cry, and put me in the "If I can't run Snickers, I don't wanna run ANYONE" mentality. She's currently on Glucosemine, MSM, and a hoof supplement as well as having a full set of shoes. My heart has just been breaking for her. This is the horse I learned how to run on, that I could go to a show and completely sweep it with no practice, the only game horse I have ever ran and she was breaking down on me. I HATED it. Many, many tears were shed, but I still have to run her. I mean, if I don't I know she'll get "depressed" and age even harder than she has already. So, I took her out last night to a fun show. After doing Ribbon Race with a little girl on her 11hh pony (and by doing Ribbon Race, I mean we WALKED the entire pattern, and she didn't even fight me one bit. Bless her heart, she knew she had to just walk along quietly with her new little buddy) we went in for barrels (it was a HUGE pattern). We had an AMAZING run. Our turns were awesome, her lines were totally straight, and I just knew it would be an awesome time. I was so happy with her, I came out of the arena, hopped off immediately, and took her back to the trailer so she could eat and drink, and mostly so no one could see me cry. We ran a 19 something- second place ran a 21. We were (1) of the only (2) 19 sec runs last night. Last edited by PaintedPNH; 07-20-2008 at 12:39 PM. |

Thanks Her heart is still in it, but her body is starting to hold her back. My farrier has suggested hock injections but I'm not to that point yet. |

Congratulations! My gamer is nineteen, and it's been really hard for the two of us to cut back. I've figured out that low-intensity rides work best, and only running the patterns occasionally. (i.e. at shows) Sounds like you both had an awesome show.

I only run patterns at shows- it's always been that way. I'm also only running 1 day a weekend when I used to be able to run 2 if I wanted. |
