Figuring things out

Hi, I'm new to this forum and the horse world in general. My husband and I have thought about having horses for a long time. Three weeks ago we decided to look at some local horses for sale with the intention of comin ghome with nothing. Well, we dove inhead first and two hours later had two beautiful horses in our 12 acre pasture. We also have steer, pigs, chickens, etc. And most importantly and three small children (boys) 5,3,and1 that we'd love to teach to ride and respect horses as the do the rest of the animals. I'm looking forward to everyone's knowledge and advice as we are a little on the green side.

Hmmmm......research research research! When I first started out I took lessons. Basic ones. She taught me the ground skills, grooming tips, safety tips and basic riding skills. I read a lot. I take two magazines. Horse Illustrated and John Lyons Perfect Horse. I watch RFD TV. Clint Anderson, Ken McNabb and Pat Parelli. Most importantly when you are starting off is to learn to teach your horses to respect you. There are a lot of people on here that will give you great advice. Welcome to the forum!

From New England!!!

Hooray, you are from Maine! I am from NH, and just moved back after living in Maine for seven months. We moved up to Winslow b/c of my husbands job and now we are back! We have two geldings and I am fairly new to the horse world as well. Through a series of events ended up having trouble with lessons, but am starting back with lessons on Wednesday!!!! I am so excited about it. I haven't done a lot of riding since I've had them b/c basically I don't know enough. I'm looking forward to learning a lot. Welcome to the forum, there's a lot of great info here. And a basic rule of thumb I learned about everything "horsey" is "Take what you need and leave the rest." It turned out to be great advice. Everybody does things differently. Good luck!

The best thing you can do is read It is also VERY helpful to have a knowledgeble person or a riding instructor tteach you how to care for and ride your horses....(it's harder than it looks!! Just in case you aren't familiar with it)

Congrats on the new additions!! What are their names? We'd LOVE to see pictures. Welcome to the forum!!

WELCOME to HGS. You certainly have your hands full. lol
This is the place to be for all of your horse questions. As the more experienced members have advised, a trainer would be #1 on my list. They are invaluable, at least mine has been. Just a wealth of information from the simplest to the more complex. Soooooooo much to learn, but all worth it. Have fun. Please let us know how things are going soon.

Welcome to the forum! Horses are a great way for a family to bond and spend time together. This is the perfect place to learn, so don't hesitate with questions! We all have to start learning somewhere...
