Wink Figuring out mare in heat???

Okay...I've checked posts on this topic but I'm still confused (lol) My mare is in heat (Aug22) I noticed her getting a little unruly yesterday...she's winking and this morning went to her stall and she's banging on the door...I have two questions...when I brought her out and took her off lead...she walked and then bucked..she was a lunge whip away from me (but I still felt some dirt) I yelled at her -- WHAT SHOULD I HAVE DONE? and question number 2: how the heck do I figure out when she's next due to come into heat? The last time I noticed unruly behaviour was July 7th --maybe I missed something in between..How many days before her next cycle and long does it last and do you start counting from the beginning or the end of when you notice behaviour changes? Also.....is it best to put riding off during this time or not? Thanks everyone

well she was obviously just excited alot of horses i no do it i would just be aware of this next time an maybe hold her on the lead shut the gate an let her off at least theres a gate between you!

im not sure how often it is but you will be able to tell from discharge from her behind!

depending on the horse wether you put of riding my mare can be difficult to catch when she is in season but seems fine to ride i would try an see what you think

Cassidy...problem is ...the paddock I have her in is where her barn is so I go back and forth to do water hay...all that stuff....when she bucked...should I have done something else? I have to admit...It caught me off guard this morning.

I think for mares its always too soon, lol. Most of the mares I know are on hormones. I do have a mini mare, and she gets really fiesty and pretty unruly when she is in heat. Just give me a gelding, lol. I am pretty sure it's fine to ride, I mean why not. She just might be pissy...but if you want to ride, make her do what you want and let her get over it

I've never had a problem riding mares in heat. Sometimes they even perform better. Jess always does her best puisance (sp?) performances when she's in heat because she's showing off.

A horse cycles around 21 days can be in heat from about 3 days up to 9. You count from the first day of "show" winking flagging the tail, squirting, and rubbing against other horses or walls ect.. Its okay to ride during this time you just might need to be a little extra cautious. A horse needs to behave even during heat, continue to be firm. Have Fun!
